Press Release: Hero Wipes®, the Most Proven-Effective On-Site Decontamination Wipe Brand for Firefighters, is now EWG VERIFIED™

Chino, CA – March 5, 2018 – Hero Wipes®, the most effective on-site decontamination wipe for firefighters, has announced today that it is now EWG VERIFIED™ by the Environmental Working Group.  EWG VERIFIED™ means that Hero Wipes avoids EWG’s ingredients of concern, is committed to full transparency and operates under good manufacturing practices (cGMP).

Effectiveness and safety are the hallmarks of a product that is designed to remove toxic, cancer-causing carcinogens from the skin of firefighters before they leave the scene of a fire as part of their safety regimen. Hero Wipes was tested and found to effectively remove 83 percent of Benzopyrene, commonly found in soot, from a simulated skin in just one swipe across the surface. Now, the additional step to become EWG VERIFIED™ underscores Hero Wipes’ continued commitment to the rigorous criteria required to join this exceptional safety program.

“EWG VERIFIED™ is an important recognition of high standards in manufacturing and communication of product benefits that we’ve long been a steward of,” said Eve Yen, Founder and CEO of Diamond Wipes International, a manufacturer and owner of Hero Wipes. “This is a meaningful acknowledgement, not just for Hero Wipes, but for our customers who are firefighters trying to protect themselves from dangerous carcinogens.”

The Importance of On-Site Decon
Through their brave work, firefighters encounter countless chemicals and carcinogens that are linked to cancer. In fact, according to a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than the general US population. In order to fight the harmful immediate and long-term effects these chemicals and carcinogens present, firefighters wear more than 40 pounds of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and also engage in a myriad of safety protocols ranging from how they decontaminate right after a fire to the care of their PPE.

Hero Wipes is an on-site decontamination wipe that is used to clean the vulnerable skin of firefighters after they exit a fire. More importantly, Hero Wipes is the only decon wipe to be studied and proven to effectively remove carcinogens, as the decontamination protocol is designed to do.

Ultimately, there continues to be a growing and committed focus on cancer prevention solutions within the fire service community. It’s important that the products firefighters are using are both safe and effective. Hero Wipes is proud to check both those boxes through the EWG VERIFIED™ program and rigorous product testing.
